The categories overlap. A crash game has a provider. A slot can use licensed technology from another studio. An aggregator may distribute content it did not develop. A jackpot can involve the provider, platform, operator and several participating casinos.

These classifications describe the main visible mechanic. One game can belong to several groups.

For example:

Paylines, Ways and Clusters

Payline Slots

A payline is a predefined path across the reels. A winning combination must normally place the required symbols on an active line.

The complete round cost may be calculated as:

Total bet = number of active lines × bet per line

Assume:

  • 20 active paylines
  • $5 per line.

The total stake is:

20 × $5 = $100

A displayed bet-per-line value is therefore not always the complete cost of the round.

Ways-to-Win Slots

Ways-based slots evaluate matching symbols on consecutive reels without requiring a specific drawn line.

Megaways games can vary the number of symbols shown on each reel. The number of possible ways can therefore change between rounds.

More ways do not automatically mean a higher RTP. The provider can balance additional combinations by changing:

  • symbol frequency
  • prize values
  • reel structure
  • bonus probability
  • multiplier distribution.

Cluster Slots

Cluster games pay groups of connected matching symbols.

The player should check:

  • minimum cluster size

A cluster system can produce several evaluations from one paid round, but this does not mean that every cascade is a separately funded free spin.

Cascades, Tumbles and Avalanches

These terms describe related mechanics in which winning symbols are removed and replaced.

One paid spin may generate:

  1. an initial layout;
  2. a winning combination;
  3. removal of winning symbols;
  4. a replacement layout;
  5. another possible win;
  6. continuation until no new win appears.

The sequence normally ends without another stake being deducted.

The presence of frequent bonus animations does not prove that the feature produces a positive result relative to the total stake.

Bonus Buy Features

A Bonus Buy allows the player to pay a multiple of the base stake to enter a feature directly.

Assume:

  • base stake: $100
  • purchase price: 100× the base stake.

The feature costs:

$100 × 100 = $10,000

Five purchases create:

5 × $10,000 = $50,000 turnover

If the relevant theoretical RTP is 96%:

Expected theoretical cost = $50,000 × 4% = $2,000

This does not mean the player will lose exactly $2,000. A small number of purchased features can produce results far above or below the theoretical expectation.

Feature purchases may be restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions. The local game version must be checked.

Crash games use a different presentation but follow the same basic expected-value principle.

In a standard crash game:

  1. the player places a stake;
  2. a multiplier begins increasing;
  3. the round can end at a random point;
  4. the player must cash out before that point;
  5. failure to cash out normally loses the active stake.

The payout formula is:

Payout = stake × cashout multiplier

Assume:

  • stake: $1,000
  • successful cashout: 2.50×.

The payout is:

$1,000 × 2.50 = $2,500

The net result is:

$2,500 − $1,000 = $1,500

If the game ends before the cashout is accepted, the active stake is normally lost.

Mines and Plinko are not continuous rising-curve games in the strict sense. They are often grouped with crash and instant games because they share:

Cashing Out Earlier or Later

A lower cashout target generally produces:

  • more frequent successful rounds
  • smaller profit per successful cashout
  • fewer large payouts
  • losses that can cancel many small gains.

A higher target generally produces:

  • fewer successful rounds
  • larger potential payouts
  • longer losing sequences
  • greater short-term volatility.

In a simplified crash model, the probability of reaching a target multiplier may be approximated as:

Probability of reaching M ≈ RTP ÷ M

This is an explanatory model, not a universal formula for every game.

Assume a theoretical RTP of 97%.

The larger multiplier is less likely to be reached.

Worked Example: 2× Cashout

Assume:

  • stake: $1,000
  • target: 2×
  • simplified success probability: 48.5%.

Expected gross return:

$1,000 × 2 × 48.5% = $970

Expected net result:

$970 − $1,000 = −$30

The expected return is 97% of the stake.

Worked Example: 10× Cashout

Using the same simplified model:

$1,000 × 10 × 9.7% = $970

Expected net result:

$970 − $1,000 = −$30

The expected value is unchanged, but the result distribution is far more volatile.

This is why cashing out later does not automatically increase expected profit. It increases the size of a successful payout while reducing its probability.

Why 1.01× Is Not Risk-Free

A very low cashout target can produce many small successful rounds. It can still fail when the game ends before reaching the selected multiplier.

At a $1,000 stake and 1.01× cashout:

Payout = $1,010

Net gain = $10

One failed round loses $1,000.

That loss cancels the net gains from:

$1,000 ÷ $10 = 100 successful rounds

Frequent small wins can therefore create the impression of low risk while leaving the full stake exposed to an early crash.

Partial Cashout

Some games allow part of the stake to be collected while the remaining portion stays active.

Assume:

  • total stake: $1,000
  • 50% is cashed out at 2×
  • the other 50% remains active.

Collected amount:

$500 × 2 = $1,000

If the remaining half crashes, the total payout is $1,000 and the net result is zero.

If the remaining half reaches 5×:

$500 × 5 = $2,500

Total payout:

$1,000 + $2,500 = $3,500

Net result:

$3,500 − $1,000 = $2,500

Partial cashout changes the distribution of outcomes. It does not prove that the game’s expected return is higher.

Mines Probability

Mines uses a grid containing safe cells and hidden mines.

Assume:

  • 25 total cells
  • 3 mines
  • 22 safe cells
  • the player wants to reveal 5 safe cells.

The probability that all five selected cells are safe is:

P = C(22,5) ÷ C(25,5)

This is approximately:

49.57%

The mathematically fair multiplier before a house edge would be:

1 ÷ 49.57% ≈ 2.018×

A real game may offer a lower multiplier to incorporate the house advantage.

Increasing the number of mines or continuing for more selections usually increases volatility. It does not automatically improve the theoretical RTP.

Plinko Expected Return

A Plinko game can offer several landing positions, each with its own probability and multiplier.

Expected return is calculated as:

Expected return = Σ(probability of result × result multiplier)

Consider an illustrative distribution:

A higher-risk setting can allocate more probability to low and very high outcomes while keeping a similar total RTP.

The provider is not normally the same as the casino operator.

Return to player, or RTP, is the theoretical percentage of total stakes returned as prizes over the mathematical model’s long-term operation.

The house edge is:

House edge = 100% − RTP

For a game with 96% RTP:

House edge = 4%

For a game with 97% RTP:

House edge = 3%

The expected theoretical cost is:

Expected theoretical cost = turnover × (1 − RTP)

Deposit Versus Turnover

A deposit is the amount added to an account.

Turnover is the total amount staked, including money won and wagered again.

Assume:

  • deposit: $10,000
  • 400 rounds
  • stake: $100 per round.

Turnover:

400 × $100 = $40,000

At 96% RTP:

Expected theoretical cost = $40,000 × 4% = $1,600

The calculation is based on $40,000, not the $10,000 deposit.

Comparing Two RTP Configurations

Assume $100,000 in turnover.

At 96% RTP:

$100,000 × 4% = $4,000 theoretical cost

At 94% RTP:

$100,000 × 6% = $6,000 theoretical cost

Difference:

$6,000 − $4,000 = $2,000

The higher-RTP version has a lower expected cost per unit of turnover. It does not guarantee a better result during an individual session.

Theoretical RTP Versus Actual RTP

Theoretical RTP belongs to the mathematical model.

Actual RTP is calculated from recorded results:

Actual RTP = total prizes ÷ total turnover × 100%

Session A:

  • turnover: $20,000
  • prizes: $26,000.

Actual RTP = 130%

Session B:

  • turnover: $20,000
  • prizes: $7,000.

Actual RTP = 35%

Neither result proves that the game’s theoretical RTP has changed.

Short samples can differ dramatically from the long-run percentage, especially in highly volatile slots and crash games.

Volatility describes how unevenly game returns are distributed.

A lower-volatility game generally produces:

  • more frequent small returns
  • fewer extreme results
  • smaller short-term balance movements.

A higher-volatility game generally produces:

  • longer losing sequences
  • less frequent major results
  • larger short-term variation
  • more of the theoretical return assigned to uncommon outcomes.

Volatility is not the same as RTP.

Two games can both have a 96% RTP while producing very different session patterns.

The expected return is the same in this simplified example. The path towards it is different.

A maximum win is the highest payout allowed under the game’s rules.

It may be expressed as:

Assume:

  • stake: $100
  • maximum multiplier: 25,000×.

Potential maximum payout:

$100 × 25,000 = $2,500,000

This calculation does not reveal the probability of receiving that amount.

A game with a 100,000× maximum is not automatically better than one with a 5,000× maximum. The larger figure can be balanced through a substantially lower probability.

RNG Games

Most online slots and many instant games use an RNG to determine results.

Previous outcomes do not normally make the next result more or less due.

Live Casino Games

Live games use dealers, cards, wheels, dice or other physical equipment presented through a video stream.

The house advantage is determined by:

The stake per round is unchanged. The total exposure doubles when the house edge rises from 4% to 8%.

Relevant warning signs include:

  • changing games because one appears due to pay
  • copying crash-game leaderboard bets
